Paid advertising to attract people to you web site has its place but there are many ways to generate traffic for free. These include:
- Leaving comments on Blogs and Forums with you web address in your signature
- Have you own blog that you regularly update (search engines love sites that are updated frequently
- Write articles and post them on sites like http://www.ezinearticles.com/
- Release a free report or white paper
- Viral marketing ( it is not as bad as it sounds, stay tuned for an article on it)
- Make sure every email you send has you web address in the signature
- Have a page on FaceBook or other similar sites
- Post articles or interesting video to www.digg.com or other similar sites
